{On a long haul flight 24 freaking hours that felt like an eternity including a layover in Narita}
It has been almost a year since our first family trip of three to my motherland. It was a nerve wracking one, it was a trip of a lifetime and it sure felt like a lifetime on the plane. I remember my husband and I were so unsure whether we made a right or wrong decision to bring a freshly turned two years old on such a long trip, not knowing what to expect. It literally took "months" of researching, buying things and preparing for that trip. Traveling with a small kid takes travel to a whole new meaning. Although she did fairly well for her tender age, we were extremely exhausted trying to keep her entertainted and felt as comfortable as it could be. I knew we swore we would never do it again but HECK we are ready to go back! (try to focus on the time we step our feet outside the airplane and pretend the plane ride part never exists). At the end of the day, we knew it was worthwhile when I saw smiles on my family members' faces and the bond they created on such a short period of time. We were glad we made it happen.

As I was browing through photos in the computer, to my amazement I did not realize that I took quite a handful of food photos. I must really miss the food there or something to the point that I had to take photos in order to remind me how tasteful they are. Food is so incredibly comforting and has such healing power. It brings back memories and good times. I have always loved my dad's homecook meal and I could care less about eating out at restaurants when we visit. I believe everyone's food has such unique taste that is hard to duplicate. It is something that feeds both our body and soul. Crazy but true, every time before we visit I make my "food" wishlist upon traveling to make sure I accomplish my food tour mission.

1) Homemade Chicken Curry with Thai Eggplant (OMG - my favorite of all) 2) Steamed shrimp and pork dumplings/buns 3) Thai Hot and Sour soup with prawns and omelette 4) Noodle with pork in gravy sauch or Rad-na 5) Thai dessert wrapped in banana leave - slap me in the face because I forgot what it is called 6) Tamarine - it was the first time I tried this young/raw tamarine, very intersting but it is supposed to be good for your health.
Very happy you eventually decided to bring your 2-year-old home. So important for families to be together and for kids to learn where they came from.

Nelah, you and your hubby did well! Traveling is already hard and when you add on extreme distances...OH MY! LOL You should do a post on that (packing, keeping busy, tech for travel, snacks, etc.)! I'm sure someone needs the tips. I was ready to jump off the plane from nola to las vegas! hahahaha That food looks really good.

Travelling with a kid in toll is really not easy. For my flight back to Singapore recently, it was full of kids, toddlers and pre-schooler. Some were really spoilt and made lots of noise. Some were not spoilt, behaving like normal kids who get grouchy. I can see how vexed some of the parents were. Yet there were also those who left their kid crying while they continued their business. I travelled with my friend and her 1 year old kid to HK a few months back and it's really not easy.
ReplyDeleteI'm going Bangkok at the end of this month after the Chinese new year. I'm already missing all the green curry, tom yam and what nots from Phuket the last time round.
My mouth is salivating, literally! Please do a how to cook blog post if you know how to cook any of these dishes?
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of you doing your daughters hair, so beautiful :) x
p.s. Just noticed she's holding her mummy's lipstick and lash curler lol she's gonna be one fashionista :) x
ReplyDeleteLil L has been on plenty of long haul flights since she was 14 months old. Up until she was 4.5, there were a few occasions where I would've happily hurl myself off the plane. Since my family live on the opposite side of the world, the plane has become our main means of transport. If I could help it, I'd much rather travel by train.
ReplyDeleteever year my baby and I take plane for germany since he was 6months only. but every flight is always different.. i just pray he'll behave and sleep :)
ReplyDeleteamazing blog you have!!! hope we can follow each other.. take care. xoxo, Haus of Gala
Loving the food pics! Drools! Makes me miss Thai food :) I admire parents who can bring young children on long flights! It would be exhausting!

Nelah, I awarded you the Cute Blog Award over on my blog. You don't necessarily have to take part, it was just my chance of saying that I love your blog! x
ReplyDeleteNelah, just ask away if you want to know about traveling with a little one. I'm no expert at all. I've traveled with Lil L at every stage of her life and she's only 5 (soon to be 6 as she likes to remind me). It does get easier. we did get pretty weird looks when we took her and my nephew up into the Cappadocian mountains in Turkey. So far, she has been to Borneo, Indonesia, Peninsula Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Italy, France, Greece and Turkey. I used to take her on road trips within NZ and even here in the UK, we hop on trains to explore the little villages. Here's a post I wrote sometime back. We both had a great time.

ReplyDeleteBtw, I would like to with you a Happy Year 2012 =)
Cheap flights to Bangkok In my mind, public space travel will precede efforts toward exploration -- be it returning to the moon, going to Mars, visiting asteroids, or whatever seems appropriate. We've got millions and millions of people who want to go into space, who are willing to pay. When you figure in the payload potential of customers, everything changes.
