Retail Therapy: Part I - Bag Hunting

What a perfect day to go for bag hunting! Never thought in a million year to step my foot in these high end retailers' doors but what the heck, right? My husband and I had an errand to do today and "happened" to be in the area. On top of that, I have been wanting to purchase a new bag that will really last me, not falling part after two to three months due to its poorly made materials. I am quite pround to say that I do not change bags often, basically I use one bag for up to 6 months or longer without rotating (due to my laziness of course). Last year, I only puchased one bag and this year I have purchased two so far. If I were to spend a "serious" amount of money on a bag, I wanted to make sure it is versatile and I could use it when I dress up or down

I personally like the look of Dior bag more than Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Fendi. If you know me, you know that I like a "big" bag or a shopping tote because I have so much junks and I seriously can't downsize to something as a size of Chanel Flap. My dream bag has to be somewhat at a decent size BUT not too big to the point that I look like a crazy person or the bag looks ridiculously bigger than me.

So I found a possibility while browsing online "Dior Panarea" (pictured above), I wanted to see it in person. It is a nice size tote bag and quite cute but its material kind of disappointed me. For a luxurous handbag I don't think you can expect to get leather at this price. That is still a lot of money for a frugal person like me who never spend over $100 on a handbag my entire life. Yet, at this age and time coupled with my husband's support (yes - he seriously pushes me to buy "any" bag at "any" price - no questions asked but once again my frugality talks myself out of everything), I want to "treat" myself with something..something.

Can't remember a name of this Dior model but it is made of lambskin and it ensembles and costs the same as "Chanel Grand Shopping Tote", please tell me who copied who?!?! The only thing I don't like is it doesn't look very sturdy and seems to lose its shape. Then I stumbled upon the Chanel Grand Shopping Tote. Similar design, more sturdy material, nice size and shape - OH MY...OH MY.. I fell in love as soon as I tried it on (I used to read somewhere that if you don't want to buy something - do NOT touch it because you will develop the sense of owership - so darn correct!). I think (yes I think) I have found a bag but the only dang problem was "what color?!" As far as materials, lambskin feels more luxurious but is so fragile. I don't think it is a smart choice for me personally based on how often I will use it.

So much for tough decision to make...I came home with this tiny little goodie bag. As soon as I can make a decision and am mentally prepare to spend $x,xxx, I shall return. (Black or Beige? I am leaning towards a light beige color because I want to break free from black but at the same time black goes with everthing)

  1. omg you must get the chanel, you are so lucky to have such an understanding husband lol!
I vote black, just because I have had problems with denim fading onto my light colored bags!

  2. Wow, it is very beautiful...I think the Chanel looks more expensive than its Dior counterpart. The chain part is better looking too. I am looking for a cream/beige bag as well although black would be easier to maintain.

  5. I'd go for the beige Chanel! I have one in another style and I'm so happy I talked myself out of the black. Have a great weekend!

  7. The beige Dior is known Lady Dior Cannage Bag, I think. The Chanel grand shopping tote (GST) in beige is a beauty and so is the Lady Dior. Either way, it is a sure win! Usually, I would go for Chanel but Lady Dior is one I think is at par with the GST. So, verdict: DRAW =).

Beige is an excellent choice. But honestly, you will look stunning in both black and beige.

  10. Nelah!! You are the next to fall in this trap we call Chanel love :) I really like the Diors too, but with your heart set on a GST, I would get it in beige caviar. Lambskin on a bag that size won't hold its shape well. It'll end up being like the Dior you passed up on.

And what's in that NM bag??? It looks small enough to hold an accessory... or wallet...? Don't tease! :)

  11. That's a tough one, but such fun to dream about it and make the decision to bring it home, right? I think no matter which one you choose, beige or black, you will love it for a long long time. Good luck, Nelah.

  13. Tough choice, Nelah! Out of the two you showed I prefer the grand shopping tote by Chanel, but having the Petite version myself I know the shape doesn't hold very well, especially if you will carry lots of stuff. So maybe a slouchier shape similar to the first dior bags shown?

Also, whenever you make your decision, the new cardholder discounts at stores like Saks & Bloomingdales can help ease the cost by 10 to 15% (and you may know Bloomingdales just recently had 20% off for new credit cardholders which is quite fantastic for designer handbags). : )

  15. Thank you for stopping by my blog! I love it when new people visit and their blogs are amazing :D I know I'm commenting on an older post but what the heck. LoL. I love Dior products. My dream is to have a closet full of dior bags. I love the color of the beige Dior bag! But I would go with the Chanel bag because it seems like it would last longer.

I completely agree with you with the serious bag part. I've been looking for a bag for a loongg time before I found my red purse. I had a Marc Jacobs one but got bored it after awhile so I returned it. So my search ended up with me having the same bag for 3-4 years! LoL. That's how picky I was with finding a bag. If you're going to spend (a lot of lol) the bucks, might as well get something that matches most of the stuff in your outfit. Haha Wow, this turned into a really long comment. Sorry!

  16. Choose Chanel, choose Chanel!! And then I will just live vicariously through your fantastic purchase. I really like the beige for spring. And it will go with just about everything, too.
