”I am on a shopping ban” – are you familiar with this phrase? Does shopping ban really work? My answer: imaginatively yes but it does not work in reality. I find an extreme approach like to ban or stop one self from doing something is not the way to go in general whether it is shopping or dieting purposes unless you are a highly disciplined person. We set a challenge, we achieve such challenge and at the end of the road, we celebrate and reward ourselves with some shopping treats.
Not to long ago, I shamelessly admitted to my husband that I think I have this compulsive shopping behavior and I feel like I buy for the sake of buying sometimes (or most of the time..wa ha ha). So I told him I wanted to make a commitment to “limit” my purchases from now. I carefully chose the word “limit” instead of “ban or stop” because I hate to swallow my words when an urge strikes. Shopping ban backfires in several ways for me personally. I am good for a period of time but at the end of the ban period I find myself going ooh-la-la and spending twice as much. “Where all the money go” used to be my husband’s and my favorite phrase as well, we used that a lot before I started doing a budget.
I have been doing a budget for “years” but never pay close attention to my “makeup/clothes/accessories” spending. It has occurred to me that I completely fail in that area by hiding these expenses in the “etc spending” category all these times. Therefore, I could never tell how much exactly I spend on my junks annually. I do my budget in an excel spreadsheet and I have two main worksheets that I look at everyday: “saving worksheet” and “expenses tracking worksheet”. I divide our spending into “fixed bills”, “dining out”, “child-related”, “home-related”, “entertainment” and “etc” categories. Recently, I was shocked to see the amount we spend on dining each month (given that I cook dinner at home at least 5 days/week and I also pack my lunch 4 out of 5 working days). I just couldn’t believe it and that led me to think perhaps I should put my clothes/beauty purchases in a separate category and finally face that ugly truth. Oh - yeah..it is ugly alright.

I used to spend a lot of money on skincare and beauty related products in the past years (tell me about it) and sometimes I didn’t even need them. I bought just to satisfy my curiosity and experiment new brands and such. Also I still can’t get rid of my bad habits of being a clothes hoarder. If you remember my trip to Bangkok this year, I came back with a suitcase full of new clothes that I have yet to wear, I probably only use 40% of them. Yet I still go out and buy new clothes here and there. Ridiculous – that’s what I said. Althought I do not think my spending is out of control to the point that I buy and get myself in debt. I can definitely put that money in a saving or save up to buy something that I truly like and will use often.
It is time to rethink about the whole budget situation. As much as I want to cut down everything, like literally everything, I hate for my family to feel like we can’t enjoy our lives just to solely focus on saving. We both work to bring home the bacon, we both have 401(k) & some money in an emergency saving and we should at least be able to reward ourselves in some ways. Our family rarely go on vacation ever so it makes sense to splurge on dining out. That is our main entertainment/luxury that we can afford so let it be.
Having something in a written form such a spending spreadsheet helps tremendously, trust me. You can create a very simple one in an excel spreadsheet and list “date” in one column, “stores you purchase from” in one column and “amount” in another column. Sum them up monthly and annually, that annual spending number will do a trick. I know for the fact that I can’t completely stop myself from buying…but…yes but I have decided to choose a middle path – limit/set allowance and avoid unnecessary purchases. It sounds more realistic and approachable.

Fellow bloggers - Have you ever tried "shopping ban"? Did it work for you?

I totally agree with you! I'm in the same boat as you are. Up until a month ago, I was buying a whole bunch of stuff because I wanted to buy it, not because I needed it. Needless to say, I looked at my credit card bill and I've been overspending for the last couple of months.. I think that put me off of shopping for awhile. My urge to shop just disappeared. LoL Now I just need to be creative with all the clothes/accessories I have and make it seem like I have something new. LoL Good luck with your shopping ban!
ReplyDeletenelah-- i am the exact same way! we have issues. lol! i love buying stuff for the sake of buying. it gives me this excitement and happiness when i hang over my credit card. then when the item gets home, i will forget about it. i do make up every reason to shop. i bought new gym clothes and i haven't even worn them because i don't want to work out anymore.
ReplyDeletemaybe i should try what you're doing...
I work in retail, and every morning when they roll out the newest shipments I have to walk buy them all...ahhhhh...This post was great, I love your honesty...p.s thanks for following my blog!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteWhat a good way to think about shopping bans. I totally agree that bans are almost impossible. For me, I have to prevent myself from going to stores I love - otherwise, I end up with one thing or another. I browse online but have to stop myself from checking out. This is difficult when there are good deals - such as free shipping! Aghhh.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. I understand exactly how you feel, and no banning does not work. Although, there was a point in time when it did work for me. Everytime I wanted something I would ask myself whether its a need or just a want. Usually it is just a want of course but I did manage to convince myself to walk away plenty of times. Thank you for following!

Throughout reading this all I could think about it "tell me about it!" I buy a lot of things because I'm curious and just want to try them out. I have tried shopping bans, but I just find that before I buy, to just stop and really think "do I actually want this, need this, live without it?" Also, I tend to go online and research a lot of products before buying, this helps a lot :) A total ban doesn't work for me, when i go shopping now I usually draw out the amount of money i would like to spend and forbid myself from using my card! xX
ReplyDeleteFleurLapin: Good for you and your wallet that your desire to shop disappear. Looking at the amount spent is truly a reality check. I try to avoid credit card at all costs and use debit/cash, it helps avoid overspending and I plan ahead where all the money will go even before I get paid.
ReplyDeletePing: I found my shopping soulmate!! We might have to go to a therapist together lol.
Priscilla: I know it must be very hard since you are a MAU and surrounded with pretty makeup. Be strong...that's all I can say.
Jarucha: online marketing is super aggressive, I know they offer all kind of things to get people to shop. The hardest part is to stop checking.
Haze and PinkOrchids: both of you are good as far as being able to fight the temptation and walk away. I find it hard for me once I am in the store, my judgements and good thinking disappear. I need to practice more in this area.
Thanks so much ladies for sharing :)
I do shopping bans and I like how they work because I am super committed to achieving them...stubbornly so. But it doesn't work for everyone and when it's supplemented with other financial strategies, it's not so scary.
ReplyDeleteBudgeting, setting limits, staying away from shopping sites, etc. All these things help contribute to making a shopping ban work, it's not just a one time deal but a continue outlook that makes it effective in the long run.
I find that after the ban, I appreciate clothes so much more and I'm pickier about my purchases so I end up buying less because I want the best I can afford within my budget. =)
Nelah,
ReplyDeleteI've been reading but I wasn't able to post comments for the longest time ever and now that the problem is solved, I'm gonna unleash my verbal constipation. I hope I don't bore you.
Well, I'm always frugal since young since we're not so well-to-do. I'm one who's able to save very well and after working for quite some time, to reward myself every now and then, what so I do? I SPEND.
For necessities, I spend the most on cab fares now that I'm living with my in-laws at a very deserted place where I would rather spend the money to book for a cab than to "climb mountains and cross rivers" just to get to the bus stop to take a feeder bus to the nearest MRT Station to get to work. The weather in Singapore just wouldn't do and most of the time, I would be carrying a heavy bagful of papers in addition to my handbag. I tried walking to the bus stop, taking a bus and then the mrt on cooler days and lighter bag days and I would very much spend the money on cabs. Time is money and I often justify by saying I'm buying time and convenience in this sense.
I also give my parents a fair bit of my salary.
For unwanted wants, I also spend on clothes and accessories though I don't go for labels in clothes so they're all affordable. Nonetheless, buying many affordable clothes means more money spent too.
For designer labels and try to buy different types of bags and purses and strictly no repeats in styles and designs. I limit myself to a prada wallet, a gucci work bag (now thrown aside since it's wearing and tearing), an LV evening bag, a few coach (coach expensive and considered designer in Singapore though I buy most of them at a much lower cost from US), a ferragamo city bag and I feel these are justified since they're all different styles of bag and I buy them with my own money. I'm left with my dream bag -- Chanel classic flap -- but the price hike is kinda leaving me helpless. Imagine that when I first liked the bag, it was SGD2+K and I thought it was ridiculous to spend so much on a bag when I first started working and decided to wait on and buy it in Europe. Now it's SGD5990 and I haven't gone to Europe. I feel quite angry about it and wonder if I should continue pursuing my dream bag or to give it up due to the price hike in a bid to make it exclusive. That amount is able to bring me on a trip and a good one at that. It could also be used for months of household expenses.
As a family of just hubby and me, he would pay for everything whenever we go out. Our food and leisure could be quite huge an expense too.
We do not do our household accounts since we do not have kids yet. Probably if I follow your method and start an excel sheet, I would gasp.
Absolutely love and appreciated this post. Completely and totally need to ban myself from shopping seriously..I AM TOO my own enemy.

I haven't spent a penny on shopping for 17 days. Shopping ban doesn’t work for everyone but it does for me. Once I’ve committed to something I am more likely to follow through. 13 more days to go. I have my fingers crossed that my ban won’t break before the end of the month :)
ReplyDeleteI am JUST starting to limit my spending. Those little buys, here & there add up so much! Since I just graduated and am job hunting, no income is scary so that's enough incentive to not buy anything hahaha
ReplyDeleteI just started Project Ten Pan on my blog - I have to say that these past couple weeks of not buying has been really, really good for my wallet. It's not just helped make up wise, it's made me not buy clothes and it's turned me to groceries so I don't eat out as often. One thing though, I think this not-buying policy is making me a liiiiittle cranky =P
ReplyDeletei have a monthly shopping allowance haha. the hubs deposits it into my shopping allowance account.. and anything that i buy.. clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags, cosmetics, skincare ANYTHING that has nothing to do with my husband, the dogs, or our household must come out of that account. it's worked pretty well i can't overspend even if i want too haha. and then when there's something i REALLY want like a new chanel bag.. i just save all my shopping allowance money.. it really helps me not just buy random things just because i want to because i know i'm saving for a chanel bag or something expensive.
ReplyDeleteJo: long time, no see. Boy, your commute to work sounds more like a trekking trip. Onto a m/l Chanel flap bag, tell me about it. I couldn't justify spending (now that it is) $3,900 before tax. I am not sure I would be happy carrying a bag which costs that much and feel good about my spending when looking at my daugther. It would be a real guilty buy so I am talking myself out of it slowly and surely. I wish I was interested in it 5 years ago, it would have been much cheaper.
ReplyDeleteStylepint and Sydney: both of you are highly disciplined shoppers, kudos to both of ya. I am going to try to be better this year. That's a good beginning, right?
Marina: please let me know if you try it and how it works for you :)
ShinyPrettyThings: your parents should be proud of you. You think about money early in life and do not overspend when you have not had income. Good luck with your job search.
The Procrastinator: good for you and your wallet girl. Wish you luck with your commitment.
Lisa: you lucky girl - I wish we made more money and had $10k extra for me to go shopping after bills/childcare and etc. What a dream! I appreciate the fact that you know exactly what you want and save up for it. I, on another hand, buy small things here and there and do not really appreciate my purchases.
Incidentally, I'm on a shopping ban. I'm in my 3rd week now and doing very well, if I do say so myself hehe :D
ReplyDeleteI also tend to shop a lot and then don't wear the clothes I buy. My wardrobe is chockful, so some things are just forgotten (with price tags still attached) *guilty*
Thing is, even though I only buy cheap stuff, I recently felt that I had to put my foot down because besides wasting money, I feel bad for those forgotten clothes. Haha you might think me quite mad to feel sorry for clothes, but these are perfectly good pieces I've once fallen in love with. So now to just chuck it to the back of my wardrobe is plain horrible of me. I'm in the process of trying to wear these pieces. Even if I don't like it any more, I'm pulling them our for new coordinates.
I've no tips for a shopping ban, but I avoid visitng the malls during this period and not browse online shops. If I do, I keep reminding myself that I'm on a shopping ban. Fingers crossed it continues to work
Your spreadsheet idea is really neat. I think forcing yourself to write it down does make it more Real.
Sorry for this lengthy comment
xx
I love it...I totally support you! LOL I went on my shopping ban in May was it? Oh yeah..June has def made up for it..hehehe
