Health or Wealth?

I used to think being wealthy must be wonderful but I no longer think that way since I have a child. If I had to choose between wealth and good health, I would pick good health over money in a heartbeat.

As I get older, it is obvious that money can't buy everything. It can't stop the loves one from dying. I was down yesterday as I heard a very sad story of one employee at work. I don't know her personally but I heard the story from someone else. Her three years old niece just lost a battle to a rare genetic disorder (Zellweger syndrome) this past Sunday. From what I understood, it is a painful disease and no cure yet exists. Infants born with this disease usually die within the first year of life.

This unfortunate loss is not the first time for this family. Her parents had a little brother who was born before her and died from this same disease at the age of 2. After he passed away, the mom found out that she was pregnant. They were beyond excited but later to find out the baby girl had the same disease. They were completely devastated. I couldn't tell you how much this story broke my heart. As a mom, I just can't imagine how difficult it was for a small child having to go through such pains and how suffered both parents must have felt seeing their little ones in so much pain and dying in front of them, not once but twice.

My little girl is healthy and strong, I am so thankful for all that. I also want to be healthy and strong for her because I want to be able to see her grow and accomplish every milestone in her life. There was one day last year when my little girl and I were enjoying each other company quiety in the backyard. It was one moment that I looked at her and told myself that I can't die. I have my whole life to live for this little person. It is just amazing how strong and loving a person can become when she is a mother.

Last but not least, The owl's closet has recently given me a blog award. I am so glad that someone really likes my blog. She is a real and sweet blogging friend whom I have come in contact with on a regular basis. Thank you very much :) I assume it is a tradition that once you've received an award, you are supposed to forward it to the next person. These are ones of many blogs I love and make sure to visit them frequently.

  1. It's true, all the money in the world won't be any good if either you or the people you love are sick. It's always so sad for parents to outlive their kids, no matter what age... but especially so when they don't get to see their kids grow up and live a happy life.

  2. What a heartbreaking story. I agree with PetiteXXS's it's terribly sad when parents have to outlive children. I guess we have to be thankful for what we have each day.

  3. Thank you for sharing the story, Nelah. As a little girl I was taught that it is only with good health that one can then truly come to enjoy and appreciate one's wealth and his/her successful life stories. Being healthy is always a first priority in my family of origin. As I was growing into a young woman, my parents wanted to make sure that my future partner is also a very healthy man (first priority on the list). I didn't always take good care of myself. However, after being engaged to my now husband, I realized more and more how much I treasure and cherish my life and a lifetime journey with my husband and a future family. As you wrote, life changing events (such as birth and marriage) can do wonders to a person. I am very happy to hear that your little girl is healthy and strong. You're a very brave mother. Thank you for being my inspiration. Your award is appreciated!

  4. Your baby girl is the cutest little thing ever. What a gift she is to remind you everyday that there are more important things in life than material wealth. The story of your co-worker is truly heartbreaking. :(

    Congrats on your award.

  5. Such a sad story. :( But, yes, it reminds me just how lucky I am to have a healthy, 22-month-old blessing. Until I became a mom, I had no clue I was capable of loving someone as completely and unconditionally as I do now. Motherhood makes your heart expand to something like 10 times its pre-maternal size, I'm convinced, and all the money in the world can't buy that kind of feeling. :)

  7. This is a very important realization to come to. Once you realize that health is so much more important than money, it makes it a lot easier to be happy in life because money is much harder to come by, in my opinion.

You're such a good mom. Thanks for sharing this. It's heartbreaking but a good reminder to be thankful for what we're given, while we have it, and to hold our family as tightly as possible while we can.

You so much deserve an award! Thank you for passing it along to me. :) You're super sweet. :)

Before having her, I just want to work and work and make money as much as I could. Now I am thankful to have 8 hour day job so I can go home and spend time with her. Your little girl is the cutest thing ever. Thanks for the award. You're one of many great friends I have met on blogger. Have a wonderful day!

health is definitely first in my book. without it, you can't enjoy whatever money you have. i'm a super hypochrondriac. it's a must for me to do my all checkups every year. my bf thinks i'm nuts. it's better to be safe than sorry right?

  13. Being a mom is a funny thing. It changes your perspective in life, doesn't it? You suddenly have so much more to live for, because the little bundle relies SO MUCH on you.
It's really sad to hear your story. I'm sure it makes you count your own blessings more. I recently lost 2 coworkers and one coworker's wife to cancer and it makes my heart heavy just thinking about it. But it does put life in perspective, doesn't it?
Thanks for sharing the cute pictures of your daughter. She's very adorable.

Thank you all for sharing :) Yes stories like this definately open up my eyes and change my outlook in life. It is hard and exhausting when dealing with sickness or loss in a family. We may be able to use money to help ease the pain and discomfort from the illness but that's all the money can do.

Collette: I am sorry to hear about the lost of your love one. My heart goes to you.
