Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but most people tend to skip it or grab whatever is convenient but it is so sugary (donut that is), greasy and unhealthy. I used to treat my hunger with McDonald's or donuts on occasion but my empty stomach was not prepared for heavy breakfast. I ended up with uncomfortable and upset stomach due to sugar, grease, fat and high sodium packed goodness (but it is delicious, I know).
I can understand the convenience of fast food and the sense of urgency in the morning..who want to wake up at 5am to prepare breakfast? I know I don't and I would rather get extra sleep.
Preparing breakfast on weekdays should not be complicated as we have so little time in the morning. As we do not have all the the in the world, it has to be quick but healthy and filling of course. My creativity on breakfast ideas was at its peak when I was pregnant. My hunger constantly bugged the crap out of me every 2-3 hours so I ate 5-6 small meals per day. It seemed like I spent most of my time in the kitchen than anywhere else in the house. I literally got sick of feeling hungry. You should see the lunch bag that I carried to work back then. It was huge and packed with 1) breakfast, 2) mid morning snack, 3) lunch, 4) afternoon snack and 5) milk. It was beyond lunch bag!
After my baby was born, I continue to use these breakfast ideas on Mon - Fri. It is something that can be prepared the night before and takes minimal time & effort. They are high in protein so you feel full longer.
*Whole wheat bread with peanut/or almond butter
*Boiled eggs, scrambled eggs or whatever method that suits my mood
*Fruit smoothie (mix Greek yogurt with regular yogurt for extra protein)
*Oatmeal (I love Hodgeson's Mill brand, I fall in love with the textures and varieties they offer and never want to go back to those instant oatmeal types). Since it is not an instant kind, it takes longer to cook especially the steel cut oatmeal. It can be cooked in advance and you just add extra water and heat it when you are ready to eat. I also add mixed nuts and cranberries in my oatmeal...yummmm
*Baked butternut squash or steamed pumpkin
What do you usually eat for breakfast?

I'm one of those people who can't really function with less than eight, ideally nine, hours of sleep... which is unfortunate because nobody ever gets near that much in residency. I'm always sleep-deprived so I'd rather sleep an extra half an hour than get up to eat breakfast. But I agree with you in theory that breakfast is important! Stay away from pastries and bagels though, those are the absolute worst.
ReplyDeletegreat post! it's so true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. i'm trying to eat a bigger breakfast, but sometimes i'm in a rush that i do end up grabbing whatever is convenient (i.e. donuts like u mentioned above lol). i love oatmeal! i've never tried the hodgeson's brand, but i'm intrigued:) are they sold in most grocery stores? thanks again for dropping by my blog!

I know breakfast is the most important meal in the day but unfortunately I don't follow the rule :) I can't eat breakfast in the morning. I usually have a cup of coffee from Starbucks until lunch.
